What types of intellectual property can be protected under copyright law?

Under copyright law, works of original authorship that are fixed in a tangible medium of expression are eligible for copyright protection. This includes literary works, such as books, poems, and articles; musical works, such as songs, compositions, and musical recordings; pictorial or graphic works, such as photographs, paintings, and drawings; and audiovisual works, such as movies, television shows, and video recordings.

Other types of works that are eligible for copyright protection include software code, databases, and architectural works. Copyright protection is granted automatically upon creation of the work and lasts for the life of the author plus 70 years.

It is important to note that ideas, facts, and concepts cannot be protected under copyright law. Additionally, there are limitations and exceptions to copyright protection, such as the fair use doctrine, which allows for limited use of copyrighted material without permission for purposes such as criticism, commentary, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research.

If you have questions about copyright protection for a specific work or situation, it is recommended that you seek the advice of a licensed attorney familiar with copyright law.
