What type of insurance should I consider if I am starting a new business?

As a lawyer, I would advise that if you are starting a new business, you should consider obtaining several types of insurance to protect your company in case of unforeseen circumstances. These may include:

  1. General Liability Insurance: This type of insurance provides coverage in case your business is sued for property damage or bodily injury caused by your products or services. It can also cover legal fees and settlements associated with the lawsuit.
  2. Property Insurance: This coverage protects your business property from damage caused by fire, theft, or natural disasters. It covers the cost of buildings, equipment, inventory, and other assets.
  3. Workers' Compensation Insurance: If you have employees, it is required by law to have workers' compensation insurance. It covers medical expenses, lost wages, and rehabilitation costs in case your employees are injured on the job.
  4. Business Interruption Insurance: This coverage provides protection from loss of income due to a covered event that interrupts your business operations. It can cover expenses such as payroll, rent, and taxes.

It is important to note that not all businesses will require all these types of insurance, and some businesses may require additional types of insurance not listed here. Additionally, the amount of coverage needed may vary based on the size and type of business. It is recommended that you consult with a licensed insurance agent to determine the best coverage for your particular business.

Lastly, it is important to regularly review your insurance policies to ensure that they adequately cover your changing business needs, because if they don't, you may not be adequately protected in case of an unexpected event.
