# What steps do I need to take to become a licensed contractor in Illinois?

To become a licensed contractor in Illinois, there are several steps you will need to follow:

1. Meet the Eligibility Criteria: To be eligible to become a licensed contractor in Illinois, you must be at least 18 years old, possess a high school diploma or equivalent, have at least four years of experience in the trade you wish to be licensed in, and show evidence of financial responsibility.
2. Obtain Insurance: As per Illinois law, contractors are required to have general liability insurance with a minimum coverage of $100,000 for bodily injury and $50,000 for property damage.
3. Obtain Bond: A Contractor's Performance Bond is required for licensing to act as a safeguard for the public. The bond is usually in the range of $10,000 to $25,000.
4. Get Fingerprinted: You will need to submit your fingerprints for background checks when applying for your license. The fingerprinting must be done at a Live Scan facility accredited by the Illinois State Police.
5. Pass the Examination: After completing the eligibility requirements, you'll need to pass an exam. The exam topics will vary depending on which contractor's license you're pursuing.
6. Submit Your Application: After meeting the eligibility requirements, passing the exam, and completing the fingerprinting, you need to now fill out the application online, which will include all necessary supporting documents and fees.
7. Register with Illinois Department of Revenue: You'll need to register with the Illinois Department of Revenue to receive a tax registration number and file state taxes.
