# What legal steps should I take before starting a small business in Ohio?

**As a lawyer, I would advise you to follow the legal steps listed below before starting a small business in Ohio:**

1. Choose a legal structure: Select the legal structure best suited to your small business, such as a sole proprietorship, partnership, LLC or corporation. Each legal structure has its own tax, liability and management implications.
2. Register your business: Register your small business with the Ohio Secretary of State's Office. Registering your business includes the selection of a unique business name, which you can do through the online database of the Secretary of State's Office.
3. Obtain necessary licenses and permits: Verify whether your small business requires specific licenses or permits. Depending on the type of business and location, you may need to obtain permits or licenses from the state or local government.
4. Obtain an Employer Identification Number (EIN): If you intend to hire employees, you will need an EIN from the IRS.

6. Comply with tax regulations: Comply with all applicable tax laws and regulations, including federal and state income tax, sales tax, and employment tax.
