# What are the requirements for starting a non-profit organization in Florida and what steps do I need to take?

## To start a non-profit organization in Florida, there are several requirements and steps that need to be taken.

These include:

1. Choosing a name for your organization: The name must not be in use by another Florida entity and should not contain any restricted words, such as "bank" or "trust."
2. Drafting articles of incorporation: This document should outline the organization's purpose, board structure, and dissolution provisions. The articles must be filed with the Florida Division of Corporations and a filing fee must be paid.
3. Obtaining 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status: To be recognized as a tax-exempt organization by the IRS, an application must be filed with the IRS and a filing fee must be paid. The organization must also meet certain criteria, such as having a charitable purpose and not engaging in certain political activities.
4. Registering with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services: Once tax-exempt status is obtained, the organization must register with this department to solicit donations in Florida.
5. Complying with other state and federal requirements: This may include obtaining licenses, permits, and certifications as required by law.
